SATURDAY 18/05/13
So about a month ago, I registered for a fundraiser/crossfit competition celebrating the 1st birthday of Zealous Crossfit.. A box in Avondale, West Auckland.
I changed up my training 3-4 months ago, so I wanted to put it to the test and thought this would be a great opportunity. I didn’t tell many people about it either, just thought I’d front up on the day and do my best.

Well it was today, and it was awesome!
The day began early with the athlete’s briefing at 6.45am, then the first lot of wods followed shortly after.
Was a big turnout too - 3 heats of scaled females, 3 of scaled males, 1 of rx’d females and 3 of rx’d males.
So for this comp, I entered in the rx category alongside 9 other girls.

WOD #1
7 min AMRAP.
- 3 Clusters (35kg)
- 3 Body blasters (1 rep = burpee/pull up/toes to bar)
- 6 Clusters
- 6 Body blasters
- 9 Clusters
- 9 Body blasters
… Increasing reps by 3 every round until the time cap.
Score = Total reps
COMPLETED: 41 reps
When time was called, I was 5 reps into the round of 12.
I could barely move my legs after this one!
What got me was definitely the body blasters - fitness was a big issue. The 35kg clusters felt like 60 by the time I had to do 9 of them. Thank goodness the wod was only 7 minutes long lol.

WOD #2
8 min AMRAP.
- 150m Sprint
- 10 Snatches (30kg)
Score = Total snatches
COMPLETED: 50 reps
“Sprint” ..lol.
I did a similar wod to this last week with heavier snatches, so the weight wasn’t a problem.. What was a problem was the running, and being totally out of breath and exhausted by the time I got back to start snatching. Not good.
What did help me though, was that I managed to do 10 unbroken snatches for 4 out of 5 rounds. In the round where I broke up the set, it was because the bar was slipping out of my hands. Pissed off.

WOD #3
For time.
- 30 Box jumps (24”)
- 10 Handstand push ups
- 20 Alternating stone pick ups (30kg)
- 10 Ring dips
- 30 Box jumps (24”)
- 20 Alternating stone pick ups + squat (30kg)
12 min time cap.
COMPLETED: 11.09 mins
This one definitely emptied the tank.
I had no illusions that this wouldn’t be difficult, especially with the strength stuff coming after a lot of cardio work like the box jumps, hspu’s and ring dips.. But the goal was just to finish under the time cap.
Thank goodness I’d been practising recycling 24” box jumps in recent months ‘cos they really helped me cut lots of time.
The hspu’s were with an abmat, so there were no issues today, all reps were unbroken and took about 10 seconds! Which is bloody hilarious because I’d been dreading them the MOST leading up to the comp.
Ring dips were awesome - the kipping finally worked today (and what a day to work lol) and I managed to string together 6, then finished the last four in 2/2.
Stone pick ups were difficult, particularly as I’m pretty sure my form was shit :/ With the stone pick ups + squat, it became about fitness again, and I was exhausted.
Hearing the judge next to me tell her competitor that she only has two more reps to go, when I still had fecking 15 more to do is a bit demoralising lol, but you just gotta learn to block it out and focus.
When I finally got that last rep, I collapsed, totally spent.

WRAP UP
So all in all, was a fantastic day. Was a well run comp, and heats ticked over like clockwork. I had the same judge throughout all my heats too and she was fantastic.
I officially placed 4th which I’m rapt about, and met some pretty amazing people too.
Big thanks go to my rock Sam for putting up with my nerves and always saying the right thing to put me at ease.. And Shan and Dru for coming out to support. In a sea of people, it’s really comforting to hear voices you know and see familiar faces. Shot guys.
So I achieved my goals of finishing all three wods, and definitely have a clearer idea of what I need to work on with my training, so it’s back to the drawing board with my programming (and nutrition..ugh).
Back to the grind tomorrow.. Let’s go!
